Technical Information

Reagent used for the trifluoromethylation of various compounds; e.g. using copper or zinc powder in the presence of various catalysts.1,2 Trifluoromethyl iodide has been used for nucleophilic trifluoromethylation of aldehydes and ketones  based on photoinduced reduction of trifluoromethyl iodide by tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE).3 The reagent is also used for the rhodium-catalyzed -trifluoromethylation of α,β-unsaturated ketones,4 and enantioselective α -trifluoromethylation of aldehydes via photoredox organocatalysis using a readily available iridium photocatalyst and a commercial imidazolidinone catalyst.5
